European Marine Sites (EMS)

European Marine Sites (EMS):

Following the revised approach set out by Defra in November 2012, the IFCAs have worked with our delivery partners, Natural England and the Marine Management Organization to deliver management measures in the high risk EMS by early 2014. As a result of this, thirteen new byelaws were proposed, widely consulted with stakeholders and confirmed by the Secretary of State by early 2014.

Following completion of this phase of managing the high risk sites, the IFCAs are now focusing on delivering site specific plans to achieve the next tier of medium risk sites, and are working with Defra and our delivery partners to finalise the plans. This process is designed to make best use of the IFCAs’ limited resources and target sites with the highest risk and therefore bring real conservation benefits.

Progress on the protection of EMS High risk sites (2014)

In November 2012, Defra announced a “revised approach” to fishery management in European Marine Sites. The first target for the IFCAs was to deliver protection against the highest risk fishery gear types and EMS features. This resulted in an agreed list of “red risk” sites which required protection by the end 2013 and early 2014.  The resultant thirteen byelaws can be found on the IFCA websites and the links are listed below:
